If you are visiting Penang for the first time, I recommend you start start by visiting the places within the Core Zone of George Town, which has been recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. There are many towns within Penang, but most of the tourist attractions are located within George Town, especially Core Zone, where can be explored by foot.
Penang also consists of beautiful nature and landscape parks such as botanical garden at Jalan Air Terjun and the butterfly park. Enjoying flora and fauna in Penang is totally awesome so don’t ever miss this chance. You shouldn’t miss the chance to see various species of birds, flowers, trees & butterflies during your visit. If you are looking for more, explore the Penang Hill using train to enjoy the fun and living environment. Besides that there are number of beaches that is worth to be visited such as Batu Feringghi and Teluk Bahang.
Penang is also an abundance of worship places which cater nearly every faith. Some of the popular worship places in Penang are Kapitan Keling Mosque, St. Anne Church, Kek Lok Si Temple and Mahamariamman Temple. If you visit these places, make sure you wear a proper attire and don’t bring any food or alcohol into the worship places.
The most affordable way to travel within Penang is by taking bus. You can travel using Rapid Penang, the main public bus operator in the state however if you are looking for a faster mode of transport, you can get a taxi which is available at taxi stands however the fare will be much higher. You can also go for car rental especially if you feel interested in experiencing the coastal areas and other areas which are not covered by the public transportation system.
Georgetown itself is best to be explored by foot. Travel within Georgetown by walking especially during the morning where you can have the chance to explore and enjoy the heritage buildings and commercial activities along the roads. In the same time, traveling by trishaws is also fun if you are looking for a cheap way to explore the city.
Money changers can be found in most areas in Penang and from my experience they offer a better rate than hotels. Besides that, restaurants with various choices of food are also easy to find and you can get delicious foods with affordable prices.
Malaysia’s tropical climate includes soaring temperatures and high humidity. The rain season usually starts in August and ends in November so it is recommended to visit Penang during this period if you are interested in sightseeing and outdoor activities. It is usually dry from December until January so is the most suitable time to visit Penang.
